WAPA uses GTMax to model pre-schedules for marketers, simulate operations of complex cascades of reservoirs and power plants, estimate firm power sales and available hydropower, and conduct power marketing Environmental Impact Studies.
WAPA has used GTMax to support decision making regarding daily, weekly and seasonal power marketing for over 15 years and, as depicted above, the model is integrated with the utility's power system operations.
WAPA is one of four power marketing administrations within the U.S. Department of Energy whose role is to market and transmit wholesale electricity from multi-use water projects.
With a service territory encompassing 15 states, WAPA manages 17,000 miles of transmission and 56 hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 10,504 megawatts, and sells power to customers providing retail electric service to millions of consumers.
To market and deliver clean, renewable and reliable hydroelectric power, WAPA requires advanced analytics for economic evaluation of hydropower resources, wholesale electricity markets, and grid integration issues.
