With the overall goal of improving national capacities in Mongolia for long-term strategic planning of the energy system, ADICA Consulting LLC trained local experts in the use of the ENPEP package and assisted these experts in developing an initial reference case containing country specific data.
Training was provided by means of a 2-week course, for 7 experts from Mongolia. The training course was held at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Staff from the IAEA and ELECTROWATT-EKONO also provided lectures during the course.
Training centered on the conduct of an integrated energy planning study, based on national data from Mongolia. Participants utilized the ENPEP for Windows model to trace the flow of energy throughout the entire energy system from resource extraction, through processing and conversion, to meet demands for useful energy (e.g., heating, transportation, electrical appliances) and to project future energy supply/demand balances. The ENPEP model was then used to calculate environmental burdens associated with different scenarios of energy system development.

In addition to providing training on ENPEP, the course staff was pleased to get a chance to learn more about the Mongolian culture and lifestyle. According to ADICA's President, Mr. Bruce Hamilton, "We were fortunate to have the city of Vienna schedule their Mongolian Cultural Week celebration during our course. We were able to taste Mongolian cuisine, tour several Gers on display, and view a fascinating performance given by Mongolian musicians and dancers at the Austrian Kunsthistoric Museum."
